Man Arrested for Impaired Driving after Hit and Run with Taxi
15-17044
A 43-year-old Kingston man is attending a bail hearing after being arrested and charged following a hit and run collision with a taxi in the early morning hours.
At approximately 12:45 a.m. on June 16 in the area of Princess Street and Bath Road an Amey’s cab, with a fare present, was struck from behind by a black Chrysler 300. The suspect vehicle and its occupants did not stay on scene, instead driving away. It does not appear the taxi driver or the passenger were injured.
The cab driver was observant enough to obtain the licence plate of the vehicle and was able to follow it to Sir John A. Macdonald Boulevard before the Chrysler departed the area at a high rate of speed.
A short time later a uniform patrol officer observed the same vehicle at Division Street and Concession Street and was able to perform a roadside stop on Patrick Street and Pine Street. Two men were in the vehicle and it was determined the driver was unlicensed due to two separate Highway Traffic Act suspensions. Front end damage was also observed to the Chrysler.
He was initially arrested for failing to remain at the scene of a collision, but the officer was able to quickly form grounds of driving while impaired. The vehicle was towed and impounded and the accused was transported to Kingston Police Headquarters where he provided breath samples indicating a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of approximately two-and-half times over the legal limit. As a result of the investigation Walter J. TEAL is being charged with Fail to Remain, Impaired Driving, Operate Vehicle Over 80 mg and Breach of Recognizance.
Suspended Driver Charged Twice in Two Days
15-16723, 16804
A 38-year-old Kingston man doesn’t appear to know well enough to resist the temptation of getting behind the wheel after being stopped, charged and ultimately arrested for driving while suspended twice in a span of less than 24 hours.
Kingston Police initially observed a white Acura with no headlights driving southbound on Montreal Street near Russell Street at approximately 11:00 p.m. on Friday, June 12. The patrol officer was able to turn around and eventually stop the car at Stephen Street and Division Street. It was determined the motorist was a suspended driver under the Highway Traffic Act. He was given tickets for improper headlights, failing to surrender vehicle permit, and a Summons to court for driving while suspended. An associate was contacted to drive the vehicle from its stopped position in a parking lot.
The following evening, at approximately 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 13 another patrol member observed the same white Acura entering onto Wilson Street from a parking lot. Having worked the night before the officer recognized the driver as being the same male suspended and charged.
Rather than issue the accused another Summons to court, noting the blatant disregard for driving while suspended, the officer instead arrested him. The car was towed and impounded for seven days under the Vehicle Impoundment Program and the man was transported to Kingston Police Headquarters, where he attended a bail hearing the following day. The officer also noted the attached plates on the Acura belonged to another vehicle, but were not listed as stolen. As a result of the investigation the accused was charged with the following Highway Traffic Act offences: two counts of Driving while Suspended and Use of Unauthorized Plate.
Police Investigating Break-In on Middle Road
15-16981
Kingston Police were called to a residence on Middle Road just east of Joyceville Road after the homeowner believed the break and enter suspect may still be inside.
Shortly after 2:00 p.m. on June 15 Uniform Patrol officers attended the residence and set up perimeter security while waiting for the Canine Unit to attend. Once on scene officers entered the house, verified a break and enter had occurred, but that the suspect(s) had already departed the property.
Cst. Jeff Dickson and his Canine partner Zeus conducted a search of the area, including a nearby barn. It was determined a 50 inch LG television had been stolen and the suspect(s) would have needed to depart the scene in a vehicle to move such a large item. Forensic Identification Officers also attended to collect and record and potential evidence.
