Police Vehicle Struck; Driver Faces Impaired Driving Charge
(Ottawa) One person was arrested for impaired driving after a vehicle ran a red light and struck a police cruiser at about 2 a.m. this morning in the Orleans area of Ottawa.
An officer was travelling northbound on Champlain St. at about 1:45 a.m. in a fully marked patrol vehicle, when he was struck by a vehicle at Jeanne D’Arc Blvd. that had failed to stop for a red light.
Both vehicles suffered extensive damage and airbags were deployed. The officer sustained injuries and was treated in hospital as a precaution.
Three people fled the scene and were apprehended by police after a short search.
The male driver was arrested and is facing charges of failure to remain and impaired operation of a motor vehicle. He was taken to hospital as a precaution.
The Ottawa Police Service and its partners have been conducting regular impaired driving checks and will be conducting regular and enhanced RIDE programs throughout the holiday season.
